The Lion and The Leopard
At the time John Ford
was filming Mogambo, in Africa, with Clark Gable, Ava Gardner and Grace
Kelly, there was potential danger because of the Mau Mau guerrillas.
The actors were told not to wander too far from their hotel.
Clark Gable returned
from filming one day, to discover Grace Kelly had wandered away from the
hotel. He was told she had been seen, heading towards the sea, with
a book in her hand.
Concerned for her
safety, Clark Gable followed the trail down to the shore. He saw
Grace. She was sitting on some rocks against a long expanse of
beach. Her book was open in her lap. She was crying!
Gable ran to her, and
asked her why she was crying.
Grace Kelly answered,
"It's the most beautiful thing in the world. I'm reading Hemingway's
Snows of Kilimanjaro, about the leopard in the snow, and I looked up and I
saw a lion walking along the sea-shore."
Clark Gable thought the
24 year old was amazing, "She saw a lion walking along the shore, and
she wasn't frightened. She was crying because it was so
moving."
