The Heart Of July
Just before sleep I
lie awake imagining
the heart of July and
it feels like a dream
forever beginning.
A solar eclipse fleet-
ingly nods over the
earth whispering good-
night to the heavens;
birds pull living morsels
from the soft ground.
The cadenza of memory
has left me with the
spare beauty of a wild-
flower, and I hold it
close as if I were near
heaven. Summer isn't
past. I long to steal
a handful of mustard
out in the field and
spill their goldness
upon my pillow.
