Norma
Jean Kawak
Biography
Creative
Work
When
and where were you born?
I was born
just outside Manchester, England, in 1942. My name was Norma
Jean Kershaw
Are you married?
Have you any children?
I married in
Australia and had five children. First three sons and
then twins, a boy and girl. I
have two grandsons.
When did you first
start creatively writing and why? What prompted you to become a writer?
Five years ago I
discovered the computer and its been my right arm ever since.
What is your favourite
book?
My favourite book is
a "A Fortunate Life" by Albert Facey. Not a literary
master piece but a very inspiring book.
What is your favourite
movies?
I have always loved
movies. My favourite is Shirley Valentine.
What is your Favourite
song?
For me, music
soothes the soul. I also enjoy talk back radio because I
learn so much from listening to other peoples views.
What are your Writing
goals?
I have been running one support
group or another for women since 1973. I strongly believe the
pen is mightier than the sword. I try to use it to fight
injustice.
What is the writing
process like for you? Do
you sweat blood or do the words come easily?
Writing is therapy
for me.
How many edits do you
normally do before you feel your work is completed?
I
probably edit my writing a dozen times before I'm happy with
it. Occasionally I get lucky and three or four times is
enough. I was told a long time ago that until you have
something/anything on paper you have nothing to work
with. I have found that to be very true.
Do you have an advice
for aspiring writers?
I do not feel
qualified to advise anyone on writing. I can only say
that I get terrible urges to "say" something
that will not be satisfied until I say it on
paper.
