Too Sweet the Wine
The drowned fly bobbed in the wine, halfway down the bottle.
“Ten thousand to one,” Alisa said, holding the bottle up. “On second thoughts, look at the size of this restaurant. Make that a million to one.”
“I dunno,” I said, “I count only six other couples, besides us. And look at this wine, a Venus flytrap if ever I saw one. Five hundred to one – tops!”
Alisa put the bottle down, smiled into my eyes, and held my hands over the remains of my dessert. “Michael. Let’s call it quits at ten thousand to one.”
But I didn’t call it quits. I defiantly clung to my opening bid until Alisa threw her arms up in despair and stormed off to the restroom.
I wiped the dessert dregs off my hands with a napkin and looked disconsolately at the small fly, the sort that greets you in the bush and engages you in long conversations. What young bridegroom in his right mind would jeopardise his wedding night over the odds of a fly getting into a bottle?
She came back tight-lipped. The excited bridal flush on her cheeks had given way to a brick-red variety that foretold a very quiet evening. There was no time to waste, I had to rescue something from this wreckage.
First of all I apologised, then swivelled around and called out, "Waiter, there's a fly in our wine!"
I'd always wanted to say something like that.
