When
is a Mayor, a Mare?
The Baroness Trumpington of Sandwich, in the County of
Kent, England, is Jean Alys Barker who was also the Minister of State in
the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food from 1989 to 1992. She was sixty-nine at the time, which gives her the record
for being the oldest female minister in British Parliament.
The Baroness displays a delightful sense of humour, as she recounts
this experience from her past …
“When I was the Mayor of Cambridge I visited the National
Stud in Newmarket. The Director told me I could safely go into any of the
stallions’ boxes. I was
happily patting the stallion of my choice when rather strange things
started to happen.
The Director put his head over the box and said, “Are you
wearing scent? Because if you
are, you must come straight out of there.
When the stallions aren’t interested we put scent on the
mares.”
Hurrying out of the box, I replied with as much dignity as
I could muster, “Not only am I wearing scent – but I am a Mayor.”
Baroness
Trumpington was made a Dame Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in
2005.
