The Good Stuff
Poems
Vineyards
in White
by Dorothy
Bransgrove
Length: 14 lines
The
scientific name for spiders is "Arachnid"
(uh-rack-nid).
The name originates in Greek mythology with an extraordinary weaver named
Arachne
who, unfortunately, began to boast that her skill was greater than the
goddess Athena’s who was, amongst many other responsibilities, the
goddess of weaving.
Athena was so angered by this claim that she punished Arachne by turning
the woman into a spider whose love of weaving was undiminished.

Vineyards in White
Bleached straw paddocks
mingle with vineyards,
lush and green,
fruit ripening.
But here are hillsides
draped in white.
Could it be snow?
No. Arachne called
her busy helpers
to weave
a protection of white.
Bacchus,
lurking in shadows,
gives a wink.
