Midnight Conspiracy

The long black bag had lain hidden in the garage for the past two days. Tonight, under cover of darkness, we would drag it out and dispose of its contents. If everything went according to plan we would be finished by midnight.

It had been more difficult to get away from the party then we had expected. We made the excuse that the children were tired and needed to get to bed. It was partly true. But tonight was a special night. After weeks of planning, our secret would finally be out.

But first we had to get the kids to bed and to sleep. That was never easy at any time and tonight they were excited and the eldest one was demanding to know why we had to leave the party early. I told him 10 30 pm was hardly early. We went through the usual bedtime rituals, which all parents can relate to, trying to restrain ourselves from rushing them lest they should suspect we were up to something.

Silence finally came, and feeling like two thieves in the night, we sneaked out of the house and into the garage. Taking one end each we dragged the bag out from its hiding place and carried it into the garden hoping none of the neighbours would see us and suspect the worst. The last thing we needed tonight was to have the police on our door step.

It was already 11 15pm. If we were to be finished by 12 midnight as we had planned, then we had better hurry. By the light of the moon we set to work trying to make as little noise as possible. And that is not easy when you’re using a hammer.

After two false starts, a few coarse words and lots of grunts and groans, our work was finally completed. I glanced at my watch. It was exactly midnight.

“Merry Christmas!” I cried. We embraced and kissed. Then we went inside to snatch a few hours sleep before the kids woke us up to tell us about the new swing-set Santa had brought them for Christmas.
