Has
the Education System Failed You or Someone You Love?
Far too many people leave school with a dread of reading and we all
hate doing something we don't enjoy. One uncaring or abusive
teacher can scar a human well into their adulthood. Unhappy
schooling experiences can convince you that you don't like reading
simply because you have been forced to do something you felt was
boring or unproductive or downright embarrassing.
Forcing someone into doing anything inevitably leads to
resentment. It can even convince a person that they don't like
reading!
Yet everyone who reads regularly has greater communication skills,
more confidence,
an almost endless supply of cheap entertainment and far greater access to the world of information.
And information means knowledge and knowledge means power.
I
find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set
I go into the other room and read a book.
Groucho Marx
Reading
is exciting, calming, fascinating and constantly appealing yet many
people who can read, don’t read. They were taught at school
that reading is boring and difficult and something to avoid.
I
am entirely certain that twenty years from now we will look back at
education
as it is practised in most schools today and wonder that we could
have
tolerated anything so primitive.
John W. Gardner
The
more we read, the more likely we are to get that promotion,
understand that situation, talk with authority and expertise,
advance our own self-understanding, and become a person of
importance in the community.
If
you don’t like where you are, change what you are
Henry Knight Miller
Everyone
who loves reading knows how essential that love is … leading
consistently to the next book, the next vital piece of information,
the next retreat from tension and strife, the next link to global
awareness. All lovers of reading feel increasingly richer with
every word they read.
The
things I want to know are in books; my best friend
is the man who'll get me a book I ain't read.
Abraham Lincoln
If
you are not reading because “reading is a chore”, you are
missing out on the greatest opportunity of your life. Reading
is the key to comprehension … and to most of the top-paying
jobs.
The
man who does not read good books has no advantage
over the man who can't read them.
Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain)
Readers
know that reading is an essential element in their own growth, yet
we all seem to know someone we care about who cannot bring
themselves to open the pages that will bring them happiness and
understanding and good fortune.
There
are three ingredients to the good life; learning, earning, and
yearning.
Christopher Morley
